Montego Bay, Jamaica - Kavesh Kantasingh, the thin-framed 23 year old spinner, once again blew away the Trinidad and Tobago batting as the quickly improving Combined Campuses and Colleges romped to a 151 run victory at Jarrett Park in the opening round of the WICB Regional 4-Day Tournament.
Kantasingh took 6 for 55 as the Trinidadians were dismantled for a paltry 124 all out in chase of 276 for victory. The effort was only marginally better than their first innings 107 as Kantasingh took six in that innings to canter to a career-best match haul of 12 for 84.
Scores: CCC 234 & 148 for 5 declared; T&T 107 & 126.
CCC now sit at the top of the points table alongside Jamaica who also won their opening match against the Windward Islands at Chedwin Park. Both winners have secured the full 12 points.
Starting day four on 105 for 4, CCC progressed to 148 for 5 when captain Floyd Reifer was run out for 24. He declared immediately and invited Trinidad & Tobago missing four of their star batsmen in Dwayne and Darren Bravo, Adrian Barath and Kieron Pollard – to chase 276 from a minimum of 85 overs.
Apart from a brief flurry before lunch the Trinis were never in the hunt as they capitulated to 96 for 6 with only Justin Guillen (31) getting a noteworthy score. Kantasingh ripped through the middle order, dismissing Guillen, captain Daren Ganga (6), Windies wicketkeeper and vice captain Denesh Ramdin (17) and Imran Khan (0).
He added the wickets of all rounders Rayad Emrit (11) and the last wicket to fall – that of Dave Mohammed (11).
The Trinidadian second innings lasted for a mere 51.2 overs meaning that Trinidad and Tobago batted a total of 86 overs for the entire match, 66.5 overs less than CCC who batted with immense application and discipline.
Discipline was also a feature which was not evident in the Trini fielding and bowling efforts as they dropped a slew of catches and the bowlers did not always deliver a consistent line.
CCC on the other hand pulled in several phenomenal catches, mostly by opening batsman Omar Phillips who completed the round as the leading run scorer with a match aggregate of 158 having scored 88 and 70 not out.
CCC also have the leading wicket-taker after round one with Kantasingh’s 12 topping Jamaican spinner Nikita Miller’s nine wickets against the Windwards.
And Floyd Reifer's captaincy was also impressive with intuitive field placings and inspired bowling changes which always produced wickets like clockwork.
