Sensational Roach destroys CCC to blast Barbados to victory

Powered by what was described by former West Indies batsman Stuart Williams as the finest fast bowling performance ever on Nevisian soil, Barbados hammered Combined Campuses and Colleges into virtual submission to secure a second round win at Grove Park.

Kemar Roach produced three high quality spells of fast bowling on the final day to finish with career best figures of 7 for 23 as his pace and movement off the seam destroyed the CCC batting leaving Barbados with 100 to get from 28 overs to win the game.

Dale Richards, the opener who bats only in fast forward mode, hit an unbeaten 55 as Barbados won by 8 wickets, needing only 17 of the 28 overs. They took a maximum 12 points to add to the 3 they got in a draw against Leeward Islands in the first round and move into second position on the points table behind defending champions Jamaica on 24.

Scores in the match: CCC 213 & 187; Barbados 301 & 102/2.

After the two first innings were completed on days one and two and the third day was lost to rain, CCC started their second innings with an 88 run deficit on day four.

Leg spinner Nicolai Charles removed the openers – Omar Phillips for 20 and Simon Jackson for 17 – both to catches behind the wicket. Roach then ripped through the rest of the batting, getting seven of the remaining eight wickets with the other going via the run out route. Five of his victims were bowled as they were all beaten for pace.

There was a brief period when the Barbadians were stalled as top scorer Chadwick Walton (43) and fast bowling all rounder Kevin McLean (24) put on 79 for the 6th wicket. This is mostly during the period when Roach was out of the attack.

Otherwise the CCC batsmen had no answer to Roach who overcame a no ball problem to blast his way to seven wickets.

Roach made it look as easy as taking candy from minors. He knocked over the stumps Romel Currency (11), Walton, McLean and Jason Bennett and Kavesh Kantasingh for ducks. Nekoli Parris was lbw as was captain Floyd Reifer  who survived two loud and convincing lbw shouts immediate prior to his dismissal.

After the Walton/McLean partnership, Roach returned to the attack and the last five wickets fell for just seven runs as Roach bowled four of the victims with Gavin Wallace being the other man who was run out for 1.

Richards and Kirk Edwards (24) then combined for a 51 run second wicket partnership to take the score to 88 before Edwards was out. Richards and captain Ryan Hinds (2*) then formalized the result.
